Washington, D.C. — What was supposed to be one of the most celebrated nights in the capital’s press calendar turned into a security emergency Saturday when an armed man rushed a Secret Service checkpoint at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, forcing the evacuation of President Donald Trump and sending roughly 2,600 guests diving under their tables in the ballroom of the Washington Hilton.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:40 p.m. EDT, as dinner was being served. The suspect — identified by multiple law enforcement officials as Cole Thomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California — charged the main magnetometer screening area in the hotel lobby armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives.
“He was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives as he ran into that checkpoint,” D.C. Interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll told reporters at a late-night press briefing. “Members of law enforcement from the United States Secret Service intercepted that individual.”
Officer Shot, Suspect Hospitalized
Law enforcement exchanged gunfire with Allen at the checkpoint. A U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division officer was struck in his bullet-resistant vest and transported to a local hospital. Carroll said the officer “seems to be in good spirits.” The suspect was not struck by gunfire but was also transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
Secret Service Director Sean Curran praised his agents’ response: “Our multi-layered protection works,” he said, calling the swift capture of Allen a demonstration of the agency’s training.
Inside the Ballroom: Panic, Then Silence
CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, who was outside the main ballroom at the time, reported being only a few feet from the gunman when shots rang out, describing Allen firing what appeared to be “a very serious weapon” at least six times before being tackled and taken to the ground by police. Blitzer was escorted to safety in a nearby restroom by officers.
Fox News anchor Bret Baier, inside the ballroom, also reported hearing shots but said they did not appear to originate from within the room itself. Sources confirmed to Fox News that Allen never made it inside the ballroom.
Guests inside described chaos: attendees dove under tables, some reporting what sounded like three loud bangs — initially mistaken for a dropped tray. Former U.S. gymnast Jennifer Sey, a guest at the dinner, called it “terrifying” and said she was forced to hide under her table.
President Trump, who had been seated at the head table on stage, was swiftly surrounded and escorted off by Secret Service agents. First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, and several Cabinet members were also evacuated to secure holding areas within the hotel.
Trump: “I Fought Like Hell to Stay”
Trump departed the Washington Hilton for the White House at approximately 9:45 p.m. EDT. Speaking to reporters at the White House shortly after, he said: “I fought like hell to stay.” He praised law enforcement, saying, “Tonight, they had everything secured very promptly,” and noted officers apprehended the suspect before he could advance any further.
Trump said he and his team had received no prior warning of any threat. He described Allen as a “lone wolf” and said the dinner would be rescheduled within 30 days.
Charges Filed; Arraignment Monday
D.C. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced Allen faces two federal counts: using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon. His arraignment is scheduled for Monday, and Pirro said additional charges could follow.
“It is clear, based on what we know so far, that this individual was intent on doing as much harm and as much damage as he could,” Pirro said.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche added that the investigation “is just beginning and is ongoing.” FBI Director Kash Patel, who stood alongside Trump at the White House press conference, said the agency is analyzing a long gun and shell casings recovered at the scene and interviewing witnesses.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Chief Carroll both said authorities have “no reason to believe anyone else was involved” — confirming Allen appears to have acted alone.
How Did He Get In?
The question hovering over Saturday night: how did Allen — believed to have been a registered guest of the Washington Hilton — get a shotgun, handgun, and multiple knives past one of the most heavily secured events in Washington?
Carroll confirmed police have secured a room at the hotel and are following investigative protocols. It remains unclear how Allen entered the secured portion of the venue, past the magnetometer checkpoints.
The 2026 dinner was notably the first White House Correspondents’ Dinner Trump attended as a sitting president — he had declined during his first term. The event drew approximately 2,600 attendees, including Vice President Vance, FBI Director Patel, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin.
WHCA President Weijia Jiang announced from the stage that the dinner would be rescheduled within 30 days.
