Prince George’s Schools Seek Public Input on 10-Year Facilities Plan Through Dec. 9

1 min read

Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) is asking residents to weigh in on a new Educational Facilities Master Plan, a roughly 10-year plan to guide decisions about school buildings. Listening sessions run from Oct. 19 through Dec. 9, 2026, at locations around the county, according to the PGCPS website, where residents can register for a session.

The district serves more than 130,000 students in nearly 200 schools and centers, according to a district video about the plan. The video describes the plan as a road map for planning, modernizing and investing in school facilities. It says the district has decades of unmet infrastructure needs and that its buildings are, on average, older than the state’s.

What the Plan Covers

The master plan is meant to help the district decide where and how to put resources across its schools. In its video, the district says it will draw on enrollment trends, population shifts and building conditions, along with public input.

The district frames the work around questions such as how learning spaces can best support teaching, learning and student success, and how schools can adapt to changing student and community needs. It says it is considering what students and educators will need from their buildings 10, 20 or even 30 years from now.

How to Take Part

The district says residents can expect listening sessions, information sessions and rounds of public review and feedback. One listening session was held Monday, Oct. 19, at the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts, hosted by Board Member Robin Brown and the district’s Department of Capital Programs. Sessions continue through Dec. 9.

Residents can register for a session near them and find details on the district’s website, which points to pgcps.org/plan.

What Happens Next

The district says the Board of Education is expected to approve the finished plan in 2028. The video does not list dates for the later rounds of public review.

Until then, the listening sessions are the main opportunity for parents, students, educators and neighbors to share what they want from the county’s school buildings.
