The announcement came during the foundation’s “Can We Talk?” Multicultural Arts & Wellness Summit and the “i AM The Table” Benefit Brunch held October 10–12 at National Harbor, aligned with World Mental Health Day. The events featured multicultural healing workshops, expert panels, and celebrity guests including Megan Thee Stallion, Wale, and Sherri Shepherd.

Prince George’s County Council Chair Edward Burroughs expressed his support:
“I’m honored to partner with the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation. BLHF exemplifies a true dedication to its mission, demonstrating its commitment through transformative action. Together we are not just envisioning change, we are making it a reality. This $30 million investment will bring lasting benefits to our community and create meaningful access to culturally competent mental health services.”

Named in honor of Taraji P. Henson’s father, Boris Lawrence Henson, who struggled with untreated mental health issues, the foundation focuses on breaking stigma and expanding access to culturally competent care for Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) communities.

Henson reflected on the foundation’s mission telling journalist Alexis Wainwright of WUSA9:
“I never wanted to just go away and make it. I always wanted to come back and pour into the community that poured into me”

“I’m just grateful. I feel like God is proud of me, he’s proud of me,” said Henson. “Finally, the world knows your name, so you don’t have to haunt me. He always said, ‘I want to be famous.'”. Henson said referring to her father.

The Temple Hills Community Center will offer culturally relevant therapy, arts, yoga, and trauma-informed services led by licensed clinicians specializing in marginalized communities. Participants will receive free mental health therapy sessions as part of the programming.

The partnership highlights a significant moment for Prince George’s County as it pioneers a comprehensive model to support mental wellness through community-driven, culturally grounded programming. The Temple Hills Community Center is expected to become a beacon for holistic health and healing, not only serving the county but also setting a precedent for similar initiatives nationwide.

BLHF also runs broader initiatives including scholarships for mental health professionals from underserved populations, wellness pods, and support programs in schools and prisons.
