Montgomery County officially recognized October as National Arts and Humanities Month; the proclamation celebrated the sector’s cultural enrichment and economic contributions.
Montgomery County Councilmember Friedson opened the session by emphasizing the arts’ historical role in social progress and community values. He highlighted a 1948 instance where actress Helen Hayes protested segregation by moving a production to Montgomery County for an integrated audience, calling it a “national statement.”
The proclamation, read by Friedson, stated that the month provides an opportunity to celebrate artists, scholars, educators, and cultural organizations. It noted that the sector supports nearly 4,000 jobs, contributes over $140 million in household income, and generates approximately $10 million in local and state tax revenue annually. The council also recognized the millions of cultural experiences provided by the county’s arts and humanities community each year, which bring residents and visitors together.
Representatives from various arts organizations, including Young Artists of America and Black Rock Center for the Arts, shared their work and the impact of arts education. Lisa Larra Goorte, executive director of Young Artists of America, stated, “We are really creating better humans.” Katie Hecklinger, CEO of Black Rock Center for the Arts, described the arts sector as essential to neighborhood well-being and a driver of the local economy.
The resolution encourages all residents, businesses, institutions, and community partners to celebrate by supporting and participating in arts and humanities activities throughout Montgomery County.
