Montgomery County Ballot Canvass Continues Through Nov. 18; How to Watch and What Changes

1 min read

Election night is over, but the vote count in Montgomery County is not. The county Board of Elections is still opening and counting mail-in ballots, and it has scheduled sessions through Nov. 18.

The county’s canvass schedule lists sessions from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5; Saturday, Nov. 7; and Tuesday, Nov. 10. Provisional ballot canvassing is set to start on Thursday, Nov. 12. Sessions then continue on Nov. 13, 14, 16, 17 and 18, also from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The county says the schedule may change because it depends on how many mail-in ballots were returned. The page does not list a certification date.

Where and how to watch

Every session takes place at the Board of Elections Training and Canvass Center, 18753 N. Frederick Ave., Suite 203, in Gaithersburg. The public may observe in person or through the livestream links posted on the schedule page. Observers are asked to give their full names when they sign in.

The county says bipartisan teams of election officials review the ballots and present them to the bipartisan Board of Canvassers. Referred ballots, which are ones that need a closer decision, are reviewed by the board at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. daily, according to the county’s English-language page.

What this means for results

Totals on the county and State Board of Elections sites are unofficial until the county certifies. Close races can shift as late mail-in and provisional ballots are added, so results you saw on election night may change slightly.

Ballots placed in official drop boxes were due by 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3, and mail-in ballots had to be postmarked by that date, the county says. A ballot that met those rules can still be counted in the days after the election.
