Most Planned Closures on US 50, I-270 and MD 650 Are Shoulders Only

1 min read

Drivers in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties face several planned closures on major roads today, but most are shoulder closures. Only one involves a traffic lane, on southbound US 50 in Prince George’s County.

The information comes from the Maryland Road Closures dataset. The snapshot reviewed by TANTV News was last updated about 6 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5. The dataset lists no start or end times, and it refreshes through the day, so conditions may have changed.

Prince George’s County

On US 50 South, before Pennsy Drive, part of the southbound left traffic lane and the left shoulder are listed as closed. It is the only lane closure in the two counties in the snapshot. On US 50 East, the left shoulder is closed at Kenilworth Avenue, and the right shoulder is closed between county mile markers 6 and 5.

Montgomery County

On I-270 South between mile markers 9 and 10, one of six southbound shoulders is closed. On MD 650 between Oakview Drive and Elton Road, the left shoulders are closed in both directions.

What to expect

A shoulder closure usually does not remove a travel lane, but it can limit places to pull over and slow traffic near work zones. The state list does not say how long each closure will last.

Elsewhere in the region, the same snapshot shows more records in Anne Arundel County, including a closure on MD 3 between Charles Hall Road and McKnew Road that covers parts of the left lanes, a left-turn lane and the left shoulder in both directions. The dataset covers state-maintained roads only. It does not include closures on county or city streets.

Where to check before you go

Maryland’s traveler information site, Maryland 511, shows current conditions from the CHART system, including incidents and closures. Drivers can also call 5-1-1 from within the state.
