For over 30 years the Toyota Corolla has been the reliable, practical option for millions of motorists. Its next generation might be much different. This 13th-generation Corolla will be a bold new design with an all-new combination hybrid powertrain, and will be previewed with a striking concept. So far as I know.

A radical new direction

A radical new direction

The Corolla Concept previewed the next-generation Corolla at Japan Mobility Show 2025 held in Tokyo. It is a radical departure from the soft rounded designs of today, with its sharp, angular styling and low hood, full-width light bar and massive windshield.

The 12th generation Corolla is currently offered since 2018, and has only undergone minor changes throughout the period. The new generation is expected to hit the market soon, according to reports, and delivery is slated to be in 2027. Toyota has yet to confirm the production version.

Toyota has just announced some details of its new generation hybrid system, which the revamped Corolla will feature. It combines a new 1.5-litre petrol engine, new electric motors and ground-breaking electrical controls.

Better fuel economy

The new hybrid system, which employs silicon carbide power electronics, offers more than 15% fuel savings, claims Toyota. The engine is also smaller and more compact which also enabled the designers to lower the hood, improving aerodynamics and visibility.

More powertrain choices

With Toyota’s multi-pathway approach, the new Corolla is anticipated to have the company’s broadest choice of powertrain options ever. This may include gas, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and possibly fully electric (as available in the market).

Inside, the concept’s cockpit is designed for the driver, the dashboard is moved forward to provide space for more passengers, and its interior is spacious and airy. The production car reportedly shares design ideas with the new Prius, such as wraparound dashboard and big digital displays.

A naming mix-up

It can be difficult to remember the name. In the U.S., Toyota already has a 2027 Corolla Hatchback, which begins at $24,780, but it’s an updated version of the current generation (with new digital displays). It will be followed by the all-new Corolla later.

Keeping the Corolla formula

Keeping the Corolla formula

The most difficult is for Toyota to make a success of the world’s top-selling nameplate without sacrificing its tried-and-tested practicality, reliability and value. However, the production version may retain some of the concept car’s styling, and it may well prove to be the most radical Corolla ever.
