From actors to musicians, designers to activists, they have all died, leaving a decades-long legacy in film, music, fashion and public life. This gallery pays tribute to 10 of the most-lamented figures of the year to date, by the date of their deaths.

Bob Weir, 78

The guitarist and singer was an essential member of the Grateful Dead. He helped build the sound of the 1960s San Francisco counterculture and kept it going through decades of tours. Weir died on January 10. 

Valentino Garavani, 93

The Italian designer became famous for his lavish, often in his signature “Valentino red,” gowns that were frequent items at fashion shows for almost 50 years. He passed away on January 19th.

Catherine O’Hara, 71

The Canadian comic actor, who was a member of SCTV, appeared in two ‘Home Alone’ movies as Macaulay Culkin’s mother. She was nominated for an Emmy for her role as Moira Rose in “Schitt’s Creek. O’Hara passed away on Jan. 30.

Robert Duvall, 95

The Oscar-winning actor was admired for his versatility. His most famous appearances were as the consigliere in the first two films in the “Godfather” trilogy and as an aging country singer in “Tender Mercies.” He passed away on Feb. 15.

Eric Dane, 53

Dane was the creator of Euphoria and Grey’s Anatomy, and eventually became an ALS advocate. He was diagnosed with the disease six months ago and passed away within a year. He died February 19.

Chuck Norris, 86

The martial arts master and action star was an icon due to “Walker, Texas Ranger” and other appearances on film and television. He also inspired internet parodies thanks to his tough guy image. Norris passed away on the 19th March.

Ted Turner, 87

The television pioneer revolutionized the news business by starting CNN and launching the 24-hour cable news cycle. He died on May 6.

Sam Neill, 78

The New Zealand-born actor shifted from art house films to blockbusters in “Jurassic Park” and “The Piano. Neill passed away on July 13.

Dolly Parton, 80

The country music star was renowned for her high voice, tearful lyrics and brilliant clothes and climbed from the mountains in Tennessee to world stardom. She passed away on 25 August. She was reported to have had a short period of sickness due to cancer.

Gloria Steinem, 92

Over the next 60 years the author and activist emerged as the most public face of the U.S. women’s movement, championing equality for women. She passed away on September 2.
