How to Report DC Crime Tips Anonymously and What Rewards Each Program Offers

1 min read

Anyone in the District with information about a crime has more than one way to pass it to law enforcement, and the rewards differ depending on who runs the program. Here is what the agencies themselves list.

DC Crime Solvers

The Metropolitan Police Department’s Crime Solvers program pays up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest and indictment. Tips can be made by phone at (202) 727-9099 or by text to 50411, and callers are told to say they want to make a tip through Crime Solvers. The department says callers need not identify themselves.

The MPD page also lists a toll-free confidential hotline, 1-800-673-2777, in its description of how the program works. The page does not say which number is preferred, so use the 202 number or the text line if one does not connect.

Any reward is decided by the Crime Solvers Committee and depends on the investigation being completed, according to MPD. Callers are advised to check back with the unit to learn whether they qualify.

Federal task force rewards

A separate program, announced by the U.S. Marshals Service on Aug. 7, 2026, offers larger payments through the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force. The tiers are up to $2,500 for tips leading to the recovery of illegal guns, $10,000 for tips leading to an arrest and prosecution for violent crimes, and $50,000 for tips leading to an arrest and prosecution for murder.

Tips go to 1-877-WANTED2, usmstips@usdoj.gov, or usmarshals.gov/tips. Anonymous tips are accepted, and the Marshals say rewards apply only to qualifying tips and remain subject to verification and program rules.

If you have information

Both agencies ask the public not to approach, confront or try to detain anyone. In an emergency or a crime in progress, call 911. Save the tip lines for information about crimes that have already happened.
