Godzilla’s record-breaking new movie is releasing earlier than expected

Godzilla fans in North America For North American audiences, the next big installment in the Godzilla franchise is not far away. Godzilla Minus Zero, the follow-up to the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One, will be opening in U.S. theaters three days after its Japanese release. Here’s what we know.

A near-simultaneous global launch

The movie is slated for November 3 in Japan and November 6 in North America through Toho and distributor GKIDS. According to reports, it will be the first for a Godzilla movie made in Japan with the franchise in the West.

Why November 3 matters

Godzilla Day is on November 3 For fans, the original Godzilla opened in Japan on Nov. 3, 1954. Godzilla Minus One also opened on Nov. 3, 2023, with the sequel thus maintaining a tradition.

A festival premiere before release

From the information we have, the film held its premiere at the New York Film Festival on September 26, 2026. This made it the first time a film was shown before any other event. 

The record set by its predecessor

Godzilla Minus One is the highest grossing Japanese-produced Godzilla film of all time, with gross revenue between $113 and $116 million. It had a budget of about $15 million. 

An Oscar-winning legacy

In 2023, this film was awarded the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects at the 96th Oscars. It was the first time a Japanese film had won in the category and the first Godzilla film to win an Academy Award.

The creative team returns

Takashi Yamazaki returns to write, direct and visual effects supervise; his the studio of the first film, Shirogumi, which previously won an Oscar for visual effects, has returned. Toho, the Japanese studio, hasn’t revealed any plot details. 

A bigger scale this time

Yamazaki has also revealed that the sequel will have a bigger budget than the first film. Rumours have circulated that the next movie will be set about two years after the story of Godzilla Minus One. As a follow up to a surprise hit, it will be much more highly anticipated than the first film. 

The wider Godzilla landscape

The Monsterverse of Legendary is on hiatus from cinemas at the moment which is good timing for Toho and a new film. Godzilla x Kong: Supernova lands on 26 March 2027 so the two movies are only separated by a couple of months.

Release dates for other regions

Dates for other international markets, had not been confirmed in earlier announcements. Toho has said further territories would be announced later, so local audiences should watch for official updates.

What fans can expect next

As the release date approaches in the coming weeks, trailers, reviews, and early box office scores will start to gather steam. It remains to be seen whether Godzilla Minus Zero will hit or even surpass the same records as the previous film.
