Violent Clashes Erupt Outside Gracie Mansion During Anti-Islam Protest Targeting NYC’s First Muslim Mayor

New York City, March 8, 2026 — Tensions boiled over into violence on Saturday outside Gracie Mansion, the official residence of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, when a small far-right demonstration led by conservative influencer Jake Lang clashed with a much larger group of counter-protesters. The event, titled “Stop the Islamic Takeover of New York City, Stop New York City Public Muslim Prayer,” drew accusations of Islamophobia and highlighted deep divisions over religious expression in the city.

Lang, a pardoned participant in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot who recently announced a U.S. Senate run in Florida, organized the protest to oppose what he called the “Islamification” of New York and to demand an end to public Muslim prayer. The demonstration attracted about 20 participants, some wearing American flag-themed attire, and included provocative elements such as Lang arriving with a goat in a U-Haul van, according to reports from The New York Times and other outlets.

Counter-protesters, numbering around 120 to 125 and organized under slogans like “Run the Nazis Out of New York City/Stand Against Hate,” significantly outnumbered the original group. Scuffles quickly escalated into physical confrontations near East End Avenue and 88th Street on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

Officers ran toward a man carrying a suspicious device

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch detailed the sequence of events in a press conference. At approximately 12:15 p.m., an individual associated with Lang’s group allegedly deployed pepper spray against counter-protesters, leading to one arrest from that side. In response, counter-protesters reportedly lit and threw two suspicious devices—described as smaller than a football, wrapped in black tape with nuts, bolts, screws, and hobby fuses—toward the demonstrators. One device was ignited and confirmed by police as an improvised explosive device capable of causing serious injury or death, though no injuries were reported. The second device produced smoke but did not fully detonate.

Six people were arrested in total: one from the Lang-affiliated group for the pepper spray incident, and two counter-protesters—identified as Emir Balat, 18, and Ibrahim Kayumi (also reported as Ibrahim Nikk), 19—for their alleged roles in handling and throwing the devices. The incident is under investigation by the NYPD in coordination with the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force.

A spokesperson for Mayor Mamdani condemned the protest in a statement, calling it a gathering “rooted in bigotry and racism” organized by “vile white supremacist” Jake Lang. The mayor, who was home at the time along with First Lady Rama Duwaji, was not directly targeted, but the event unfolded during Ramadan, adding to sensitivities around Muslim religious practices.

Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist and the city’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor, was sworn in on January 1, 2026, after a historic election victory. He has emphasized representing all New Yorkers and governing “audaciously” amid ongoing challenges.

Lang has not issued a formal statement on the violence but posted online claiming he “just survived an assassination attempt,” according to media reports. The episode underscores rising polarization in New York City following Mamdani’s ascension, with critics on the right amplifying concerns about cultural shifts and supporters defending religious freedoms under the First Amendment.

Police urged calm and said further charges could be forthcoming as the investigation continues. No additional incidents were reported in the immediate aftermath.
