Maryland voters showed up on June 23 to shape the ballot that will define the state’s next four years — from the Governor’s mansion in Annapolis to county executive offices across the DMV. Because Maryland is a heavily Democratic state, many of Tuesday’s primaries functioned as the de facto general election, especially in local and legislative races where no Republican filed to run.

This guide breaks down what happened, what it means for our region, and what voters need to know before the real decision point: November 3, 2026. As always, TANTV’s coverage centers facts over spin, with results sourced from the Associated Press and the Maryland State Board of Elections. Some county-level totals are still unofficial and subject to certification.

What it meansGov. Wes Moore secured the Democratic nomination for a second term and will face 2022 GOP nominee Dan Cox in a rematch this November — a race Moore enters as a heavy favorite in a blue state, but one Republicans see as a chance to relitigate Moore’s first-term record on taxes, spending, and public safety.

Attorney General: Incumbent Anthony G. Brown (D) and Republican Jim Rutledge III each ran uncontested in their primaries. Both advance automatically to the November 3 general election.

Comptroller: Incumbent Brooke Lierman (D) ran uncontested and will face Republican Sonya Dunn in November — a race to watch since this office oversees state tax collection and Maryland’s spending priorities.

The four districts that most directly touch TANTV’s core coverage area — the D.C. suburbs and Southern Maryland.

Open seat — Steny Hoyer’s former seat, after 45 years

What it meansState Delegate Adrian Boafo won a crowded 27-candidate field with backing from Hoyer, Gov. Moore, and Sen. Angela Alsobrooks, plus more than $8 million in outside spending tied to AIPAC’s United Democracy Project and crypto-industry PACs. He’ll face Republican Chris Chaffee in a district covering Charles, St. Mary’s, and Calvert counties along with parts of Prince George’s and Anne Arundel.

What it meansCouncilmember Will Jawando held a commanding lead over fellow Councilmember Andrew Friedson as Evan Glass conceded Wednesday afternoon. Jawando campaigned on fully funding Montgomery County Public Schools through a higher tax on wealthy residents rather than a residential property tax hike. He’s favored heavily over Republican nominee Esther Wells in November — registered Democrats outnumbered Republicans roughly 10-to-1 in this primary.

Baltimore City Sheriff: In a closely watched result, Sabrina Tapp-Harper appears to have unseated incumbent Sheriff Sam Cogen — despite Cogen holding endorsements from Gov. Moore, Baltimore State’s Attorney Ivan Bates, AG Anthony Brown, and Rep. Kweisi Mfume. A reminder that local name recognition and ground game can outweigh a stacked endorsement list.

Senate President Bill Ferguson (Baltimore): Ferguson turned back a viral, social-media-driven primary challenge from sailboat captain Bobby LaPin, who ran closer than expected despite a roughly 30-to-1 fundraising disadvantage — a sign grassroots attention doesn’t always need deep pockets to move votes, even if it wasn’t enough to win this time.

Certification — now through mid-July

Several races, including Montgomery County Executive and Baltimore City Sheriff, were still unofficial at publication. Counties must complete their canvass and the State Board of Elections must certify results before any race is final.
